Prepare one quiet room
Kittens settle faster in a small, quiet space before they explore the whole home. Set up a bed, a litter tray away from the food bowls, fresh water and a scratching post. Check for gaps behind furniture, loose cables and open windows.
Keep the food the same
Ask what the kitten has been eating and keep to it for the first week. Kittens need kitten food in three or four small meals a day. Change foods gradually over seven days to avoid an upset stomach.
Book the vet early
Register with a vet in the first few days. Bring any vaccination and deworming records so they can plan the remaining doses, and ask about microchipping and neutering.
Play, handle, repeat
Short, gentle handling sessions and daily play build a confident cat. Use wand toys rather than hands for rough play, and let the kitten come to you.
