Width matters most
Budgies fly side to side, so choose a cage that’s wide rather than tall: at least 60 cm for a pair. Bar spacing should be narrow enough that heads can’t get stuck, around 1–1.2 cm.
Perches and toys
Use perches of different thicknesses, ideally including natural branches, so feet get exercise. Add a couple of toys and rotate them weekly. Don’t overcrowd the cage; leave room to flap.
A varied diet
Seed is a base, not the whole diet. Offer fresh greens and vegetables daily, refresh the seed bowl rather than topping it up, and change water every day.
Daily routine
Budgies need company and time out of the cage in a safe, closed room. Keep the cage away from the kitchen, drafts and direct sun, and give them 10–12 hours of quiet darkness at night.
