Prepare their home first
Check that the aquarium is cycled, the filter is running, and temperature and water chemistry suit the species. A separate quarantine tank lets you watch new arrivals before they join an established community.
Keep the first moments calm
Dim the lights and follow the acclimation steps for the species and the journey. Fish that travelled a long way need different handling from a short trip home. Don’t leave bags in the sun or in a cold room.
Transfer with care
Move fish gently with a net or container, and keep transport water out of your aquarium. Give them places to hide and watch quietly. Don’t add more fish than your filter and tank can support.
Watch and adjust
Watch breathing, swimming and appetite over the next few days. Feed lightly and test for ammonia and nitrite. If fish seem distressed, check water quality and temperature quickly and get advice from an aquatic vet if needed.
Every animal is differentUse this guide as a starting point, check the needs of your own species and setup, and see a vet when an animal is unwell.
